Hastings couple Jess and Pearl Rhoades celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary surrounded by family and friends at the Rainbow Trout, Brede.

They even received a special card from Her Majesty the Queen, congratulating them on this milestone achievement of 60 years.

The couple, childhood sweethearts, met when they were just 14 and 13. They were married on June 4, 1955, in Hawkhurst, Kent and lived there for more than 40 years before moving to The Ridge in Hastings.

Jess said: “We are so grateful to all the family for getting together and sharing our special day. It was lovely to see everyone and watch the children playing together.

Pearl added: “We have another two great-children due this year one next month and one in September. We consider ourselves very lucky to have such a lovely family and be able to share such special times together.”

Jess and Pearl’s eldest daughter Sue and her husband Den celebrated their Ruby wedding, 40 years, last month.

The couple are keen bowlers and play regularly for their local, Westfield Bowls Club.

And the secret to their long and happy marriage? Jess says he does everything Pearl tells him!

The couple’s daughter Lorna Jackson said: “Jess is now 81 and Pearl is 80 and both are an inspiration to all the family. They have joined Facebook in the last couple of years to keep in touch with all the family.”
