ON Friday, March 15 the Hastings and St Leonards RSPB Group have a talk entitled Pirates and Patriots by well-known local historian Brion Purdey.
Brion will relate the story of the Cinque ports, which include Hastings, and will explain their major role in the naval defences of Britain from the time of Edward the Confessor to that of Henry VIII.
He will also tell of their responsibilities and rewards in the past and of their role today.
The meeting takes place at the Taplin Centre, Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards. Visitors are welcome for an admission charge of £3 including refreshment.
Last month’s talk by Michael Blencowe gave a fascinating insight into a year spent searching for some elusive wildlife after reading a 100-year-old natural history book.
This was an entertaining as well as an informative talk and unlike any other natural history talk that you will have ever have heard.
For anyone who missed it Michael will be giving the same talk at Hastings and East Sussex Natural History Society at the same venue at 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 10.
