There have been mixed results (but overall quite good) for your local club as the season gets into full swing.
In the top division of the Kent League we overcame Folkestone team by 4½-1½, unbeaten across the six games. We drew on the top three boards - Francis Rayner, Ollie Willson and John Sugden - with our bottom three delivering the wins: Andrew Fleming, Ray Brooks and Jim Wheeler. Skipper Brooks viewed it as: ‘a good result... away from home, against an under strength Folkestone’.
Staying in the Kent League our more humble players had a good win in the bottom division, coming from behind to beat Snodland 2½-1½ away on a dank leaden Kentish day. New captain Adrian Cload upset the form book by beating a much stronger player on top board, Paul Buswell also won, and Harry Stephens had a good result to draw on bottom board; Con Power though had a bad loss.
In Division 1 of the Mid-Sussex League our seconds had a good win at Eastbourne firsts. Four of the games were drawn, echoing the previous week’s dour showing, our players being Ollie Willson, John Sugden, Andrew Fleming and Steve Blewitt. But Club Treasurer Jim Wheeler on board 4 came through with a good win to give us a 3-2 victory.
However, in division 2 the thirds opened their season with a home defeat at the hands of Horsham thirds, 2-3. Club Chairman Marc Bryant was our only winner, Paul Kelly and Jeremy Hudson drew, Jim Wheeler and Derek Cosens lost.
Matches at the Chess Club (2 Cornwallis Terrace) next week: Wednesday, November 19, thirds home v Brighton seconds, 7.30pm.
