Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club

CLUB secretary Ken Lucas is the first winner to emerge from the winter tournaments.

He has won the second division Pelton Cup with a game in hand and wins promotion to next season’s Championship. The runner-up spot is still up for grabs so full details when that is settled.

Our Mid-Sussex League season fizzled out with two defeats: the thirds, going for third place in Division 2, went down 3-2 at Brighton in their last match. Their chances weren’t helped by a car breakdown causing them to default one board; Laurence Butt and Daniel Lowe won, Mel Young and Robert Smart lost, overall score 2-3. The fourths were already promoted but playing for the Division 4 title at home to lowly placed Horsham sixths. We needed a win but the squad rotation system, resting some of our stronger players, backfired badly. The opposition gifted us a point by turning up a man short but we then fell apart 1-4, Eric Houghton, Umberto Jozwiak, Roy Richardson and Siegfried Warda all losing.
