Club chairman Paul Buswell was the club’s star turn for his results in the minor tournaments at the recent International Chess Congress, which earned him the annual trophy presented by Councillor Maureen Charlesworth for best overall performance by a local player.
Jeremy Hudson, Alfredo Luaces, Chris Rogal and Jim Wheeler were section winners in the New Year tournaments, with Helen Evans, Chris Howell and Mason Woodhams in the place money. In the ‘weekend’ competitions Steve Oakman was also placed.
Sixteen club members still hadn’t had enough and turned out for the club’s ‘cold turkey’ rapid play the other week. Fourth seed Paul Kelly of St Leonards, who had put in 19 games for no prize at the international event, found form here and stormed to a 6½ points victory from his seven games, conceding only a draw to runner-up John Sugden (Bexhill) on 5½ points. Conrado Quintos (St Leonards) was third and Jude Lenier (Brightling) fourth, both on 5 points. Category prizes were won by Mason Woodhams (Hastings) and Alfred Mikurenda (Little Common).
