Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club

There has been more Mid-Sussex League action for the Hastings and St Leonards Club.

Our first team had a comfortable win in the local derby against Eastbourne, winning 3½-1½. Francis Rayner, Richard Almond and captain Paul Kelly all won, with a draw in support from John Sugden; Bernard Cafferty alas lost.

The seconds went down 1½-3½ to Horsham. Jim Wheeler picked up a full point for us, supported by a draw from Bernard Cafferty, but Alan Bartron, Allfredo Luaces and Mel Young all went down.

In Division 2 new third team captain Gary Willson marked taking over the reins with a 3½-1½ win against the oddly named Crawley Argumentatives. He was helped to a full point start when the visitors turned up a man short. Omer Namouk followed up with a quick win while Steve Blewitt drew; Mel Young then succumbed but captain’s son Ollie on top board took a good win against a strong opponent.

Turning to the Kent League, with the season three-quarters over our division 2 team looks very well set to qualify for the County semi-finals. They crushed Rochester in a double-header up on the estuary, winning by 4½-1½ and then 5-1. Paul Kelly, Mel Young and Tim Spanton won both their games, Jim Wheeler won one and drew the other, while débutants Daniel Gibbs and Helen Evans shared the points with their opponents.
