Amber Rudd stuck with the Conservative plans in a vote proposed by the opposition to reverse the cuts.

Natalie Crabb, of Post Office Passage, Hastings, said she was disappointed with MP as she continues to let down the people she should be protecting.

“If she hasn’t got the bottle to stand against George Osborne then move over and let someone else,” she said.

“Child tax credits should not be cut back to help the government maybe the MP’s should not have an income for a year and live on benefits and see how they like it.”

Ms Rudd did not add to the debate in the House of Commons prior to the vote.

She has come under a lot of pressure since the cuts were announced and was in the spotlight when a woman burst into tears on Question Time while addressing her.

Rebecca Devenney, of Manor Road, Hastings, said: “It was David Cameron who said that tax credits would not get cut but this is now being proven to be lies.

“Ms Rudd, why not do the right thing and fight against tax credits being cut?”

Liberal Democrat candidate for the constituency Nick Perry said: “The changes to tax credits will hammer families in Hastings and Rye.

“The move completely undermines any claim the Tories have of being on the side of working families.

“What makes this even worse is that 9,400 children in our area will now be forced to live in poorer households, reducing their life chances and making it harder for their parents to make ends meet.
