A SUCCESSFUL club auction was held on February 6, hard work put in by those involved raised useful funds for the club.
February 20 was a real treat for all. Distinguished philatelist, Michael Farrant FRPSL, (that is a Fellow of the Royal Society, London), showed 200 pages of classic covers, stamps and cards from his superb Zanzibar collection.
Mike had our undivided attention while described the history of Zanzibar, an island off the east coast of Africa, part of what is now Tanzania. Always of strategic importance, fought over and changed administration many times, material was shown from all periods of its history.
A card posted July 30, 1914, conveyed by ship to London, to be forwarded on to an address in Germany. However, the First World War had broken out. The card was detained in London and not forwarded until 1919.
