Hastings and District Anglo-French Club

Our cheese-tasting afternoon on October 28 was, like last year, a huge success.

Eric Chauvel of The French Delicatessen (open as a market stall in the town centre every Thursday) came to give us a talk with cheese to taste. We were able to learn which wines best complement particular types of cheese by tasting them together.

This year, concentrating on three particular varieties, we learned a great deal about how they vary in taste and price according to age and maturity. Eric also gave us lots of interesting anecdotes about cheese-making. Though he spoke in French, he also provided hand-outs in English to help anyone struggling with the details.

Our next meeting was on Tuesday, November 11, Armistice day. As this year is the Centennial of the First World War, we spent the afternoon sharing stories related to both the First and Second World War. Many members had stories from their families, some based in the UK, others in France, Holland and Denmark.

It was really interesting to get a close and personal view through unrecorded stories that had come directly from people who had experienced the terrible hardship of war.

Our next meeting, on November 25, is our Annual General meeting. This may not interest newcomers but, of course, anyone is welcome and there will be the usual refreshments and informal chatting afterwards. As usual, the venue is Holy Redeemer church hall in Upper Church Road at 2.30pm.
