Hastings and District Anglo-French Club

OUR first meeting of the 2013-2014 season was a friendly social afternoon.

Our next meeting (at 2.30pm in the church hall of Holy Redeemer Church as usual) will be on Tuesday, October 1 and will be a talk by Dr Elspeth Knights on the rise of feminism in France.

Illustrating her talk with a slide show, she will begin with the 17th century salons where ladies began to exercise their minds, especially after liberal-minded men such as Descartes had suggested that women as well as men had intellects. Certainly not everyone agreed with his broad-minded ideas and there was a long way to go before Simone de Beauvoir and 20th century feminism.

Dr Elspeth will give us printed extracts (with English translations) from Molière’s funny, satirical play Les Femmes Savantes and explain who the author was targeting with his wit.
