Give up smoking

With just over 100 days to go until England becomes smokefree, more smokers than ever are expected to quit the habit on this year's National No Smoking Day (Wednesday, March 14).

On July 1, England will become smokefree, so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from secondhand smoke. According to a survey carried out by GfK NOP, one in four UK smokers said getting rid of smoking in pubs, clubs, restaurants and bars would be the boost they need to try and quit for good.

To help those who want to quit, Hastings and Rother PCT has organised a range of events on March 14, where members of the Stop Smoking Service will offer support and advice:

l Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, 8.30am-5.30pm

l Hastings College, noon-2pm

l Bexhill College, noon-2pm

l Sainsburys, Battle Road, St Leonards, noon-2pm

l Battle Health Centre, Mitre Way, Battle, 6pm-8pm

Stuart Ramsbottom, senior health promotion adviser for the PCT, said: "The smokefree legislation will mean significant changes that will lead to more smokers than ever thinking about quitting smoking.

"No Smoking Day is an ideal opportunity to take the first step towards a new healthier lifestyle and help is available locally from our stop smoking service."

The PCT is also working closely with Rother District Council which will be responsible for policing the smoking ban from July 1. The xouncil will be producing information on what the ban will mean for businesses and is setting up an email address to deal with enquiries at [email protected]

Richard Parker-Harding, head of environmental health at Rother, said: "England going smokefree on July 1 is a major public health improvement. We are working with colleagues at the PCT and Hastings Borough Council to ensure everyone is aware of the new legislation. I am sure the new law is welcomed by the majority of the public and knowing the goodwill of the businesses of Rother there will be full compliance."
