People using the car park at the Hastings Centre over Christmas will be able to provide a hot drink for someone in need.

The scheme is being run by Kings Church, who operate the centre and car park opposite the Conquest Hospital on the Ridge.

Natalie Williams, from Kings Church, explained: “For ten days across Christmas and New Year (from December 24 - January 4), we will be donating every car parking payment to our local charity of the year, Hope Kitchen.

“As well as this, when people pay for parking they are given a voucher to get money off a coffee in our on-site coffee shop Coffee Box. We will be encouraging people to give a hot drink to someone in need this Christmas instead.

“This is how it works. If people post their voucher through our letterbox over the Christmas period, we will add every voucher to our ‘suspended coffee’ jar, turning each voucher into a free hot drink for anyone in need who comes in asking for a ‘suspended coffee’.

“Suspended coffee is an international scheme which allows people to buy a coffee for someone who can’t afford to buy one for themselves.

“ Again, we run it all year round, but over Christmas we are saying simply donate your voucher for a discount on your coffee and we will count it as the whole cost of a hot drink for someone who needs it.”

Natalie added: “With the parking charges, all of our profits go to community-based projects all year round, but over these ten days over the Christmas period, everything paid into the machines will go to Hope Kitchen.”

Hope Kitchen is a soup kitchen based at Wellington Square Church in Hastings.
