Generous residents of Hastings and St Leonards have given £2,500 to buy shelters for Calais refugees

On Saturday September 26, a Hastings wide fundraising campaign was launched to buy shelters for refugees living in the Calais ‘Jungle’.

The initial target was to provide two shelters costing £600 each.

In the first three days of the campaign local residents have donated more than £2,500, enough for more than four shelters.

The Hastings Supports Refugees group have been overwhelmed enormous generosity of members of the public.

Other groups across the UK and elsewhere in Europe are also raising funds for these shelters.

They are the type of high quality weatherproof tent used by the United National High Commission for Refugees in their camps around the world.

The shelters will be equipped with stoves to provide, heat, cooking and hot water.

Hastings Supports Refugees is a group of more than 800 people keen to coordinate efforts to help refugees across Europe.
