Garden's mystery hole

CHRISTMAS brought a mystery for a Maresfield couple when a 30ft deep ditch appeared in their back garden overnight.

John and Rachel Johnson, of Maple Close, first noticed a small hole in their garden on Saturday evening. By Sunday lunchtime, it had become a 6ft wide chasm and it appeared to be getting bigger.

'It's very odd,' said Mrs Johnson. 'How it got there, I honestly don't know. It's circular, probably about 9ft wide by now and about 30ft deep.

'I've got four children, the youngest of which is only two, so none of them are allowed out in the garden any more.

'My husband is very upset about his lost rose bushes!'

The homes in Maple Close, which are owned by a housing association, are built on an old army training camp. Mr and Mrs Johnson had a site surveyor round on Monday to find out exactly what was going on with their garden, but he told them he had never seen anything like it in his life.
