PLANS to build a cattery near a Seaford cul-de-sac has ruffled neighbours' fur.

PLANS to build a cattery near a Seaford cul-de-sac has ruffled neighbours' fur.

Seaford Town Council planning committee members discussed plans for the cattery, on land off Hythe Close, on Thursday last week.

The cattery would comprise 20 cat 'chalets' and runs.

Neighbours complained about the potential for extra traffic problems, noise and smell, and suggested it should be built in rural or semi-rural areas away from homes.

Cllr Julian Peterson echoed neighbours' concerns about traffic. He said: 'There is an issue of access into the cattery. It is quite a dangerous turning.'

Cllr Les Whittle agreed. 'There is bound to be a lot of coming and going,' he said.

Cllr David Schueler raised concerns about road safety. He said: 'It could lead to congestion or possible accidents.'

But neighbours' worries about noise and smell were unfounded, said Cllr Gilly Cowdrey.

She had checked with Lewes District Council to find out how many complaints it had received about other catteries in the district and found none.

She said a town the size of Seaford needed a cattery. 'It is the type of service the town does need.'

Cllr Jean Whittle agreed. She said: Most people are not really aware of how they work and how strictly supervised they are.'

Councillors voted six to two that Lewes District Council reject the application.
