Fun and fund-raising at Senior Citizens Club

"We always have a good atmosphere - we have a laugh."

So said Kathleen Haggata who organised the stalls for the grand sale at the Senior Citizens' Club in Eversley Road on Saturday.

And she was right - the building was buzzing with chat and laughter as members rummaged through the goods on sale or called out their name when their number came up in the raffle.

Kathleen was assisted on the bric-a-brac stall by the ladies from her Thursday morning keep-fit class - Jean Witt, Jackie Warner, June Gray and Jean Packham.

Nearby Sheila King was selling books, while Senior Citizen Club singers Janet Szajer, Joan Chambers and Sheila Woollett were helping raise money on a musical way, by selling CD's, tapes and DVDs.

Inez Richards was in charge of the raffle with Irma Griffin and said: "We have made it a very good raffle, a big one. If people are paying a pound a strip then they have got to have something good back, and they are getting that."

Pam Adams on the cake stall was selling an assortment of delicious home-made treats and reported that business had been brisk.

Chairman of the social committee Jim Haggata said: "We are pleased with the turn-out - we have done quite well. There is always a good crowd, and the Town Mayor Councillor Paul Lendon has also been and said hello to people here.

"It brings people in and helps the citizens of Bexhill know we exist."

Money raised by the event will go to the upkeep of the building which was recently re-decorated.

There are currently 450 members, and Jim recommends the Senior Citizens Club for anyone over the age of 55:

"This is a very busy place. There are different activities in the club every morning and afternoon - we have computer skill, keep-fit, dancing, mexican dominoes, carpet bowls once a week...we also have lots of outside activities and outings. We are going on holiday to the Isle of Wight in November for five days, 46 of us, and we do have fun.

"We do lots of other activities - we have concerts and different events, we have talks with quite a range of different subjects,. We give members of the club the opportunity to express themselves. We have a good writing group where people are encouraged to write down their own stories."
