Full programme for Battle’s Big Event

This ongoing photography competition, targeting two age categories (Under 12s and 12-18 years), focuses on the theme of ‘Sports’. Entries to be submitted by July 2 for judging. Winners from the two groups will be exhibited at the club exhibition on August 25/26 along with prize presentations. Free to enter.

n Battle History as it Happens at Battle Museum of Local History, June 29-Sept 9.

Entitled the Young People’s Legacy 2012, this project for ages five to 16 aims to exhibit photographs and video, captured on mobile phones, which document Battle’s Big Event from start to finish. Photographs and video will be exhibited at the Battle Museum throughout the festival period. Prizes on offer. Free to enter.

n Battle Dog Show, Battle Recreation Ground, Saturday June 30, 11.30am.

A fun day for dogs and owners to compete for rosettes and prizes for first to third in nine classes and the prestigious Best in Show title. £1 per dog, per class. Free to spectate.

n Battle Band Night, Battle Recreation Ground, Saturday June 30, 7pm.

n Jubilation! A Celebration of British Musicals of the Last 60 Years, Battle Recreation Ground, Sunday July 1, 3pm.

Battle Light Opera Group celebrate British musicals of the last 60 years with a concert of song and dance complete with cream tea.

Tickets £5 child, adult £10, includes tea.

n Claverham Community Week, Claverham Community College, July 2-6, 6pm.

Claverham Community College has teamed up with the East Sussex Music Service, Pestalozzi International Village Trust and Battle Arts to present a week-long programme of exhibitions and performances. There will also be open sessions of adult education classes in silversmithing, jewellery making, sugarcraft and cookery. Free.

n Battle Countdown Health Walks, July 6, 13, 20 and 27, 10am.

Countdown the Fridays to the start of the London 2012 Games on four different walking routes in and around Battle. Walkers attending all four Battle Olympic Health Walks will receive a memento of the 2012 Olympics. Free.

n Crowhurst Games, Crowhurst Recreation Ground, Saturday July 7, 1.45pm.

An exciting selection of sporting games including archery, football and tug-of-war will be accompanied the lighting of the Crowhurst Flame at 2pm and entertainment from local band The Exiles at 6pm. Licensed bar and barbecue also provided throughout the day. Free.

n Battle Community Run, Battle Abbey Gatehouse, Sunday July 8, 9am.

Join and meet other local runners in a pleasant three to four mile run around Powdermill Woods. Free.

n Battle Ramblers Week of Local Walks, Battle Abbey Gatehouse, July 9-13, 6.30pm.

Battle Ramblers will lead a short walk each evening of the week, Monday to Friday. Distances will vary from 1.5km (one mile) to 6.5km (four miles) and will take in the town as well as surrounding countryside with stunning views. Free.

n Mark Fisher @ Nobles, Nobles Restaurant, Tuesday July 10, 7pm.

Michelin-awarded restaurant, Nobles, hosts an evening of wine and beer tasting, alongside an art demonstration by local artist Mark Fisher. Booking required.

n Flower Show, Battle Memorial Hall, Saturday July 14, 11.30am.

Flower, vegetable, domestic and floral art classes with a plant stall and tombola. Teas and light lunches available from 11am. Free.

n The Abbey Green Variety Show, Abbey Green, Battle, Saturday July 14, 11am.

An afternoon of music, dance performances and displays by local groups and organisations on the Abbey Green. Free.

n Open Triples Tournament, Battle Bowls Club, Sunday July 15, 11am.

Sixteen teams of three will be participating in this all-day, Olympic-themed bowls event, entitled Go For Gold. Gold, silver and bronze medals to be awarded to the successful teams. Free.

n Battle Memorial Hall Community Cinema: War Horse, Battle Memorial Hall, Wednesday July 18, 7.30pm.

This month the Community Cinema evening features Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated drama War Horse. Licensed bar and refreshments available. Tickets 50p (plus suggested donation to Battle Memorial Hall, adult £3, student £2).

n Family Tennis Day, Battle Recreation Ground, Saturday July 28, 9.30am.

Think you are the next Bryan Brothers? This fun-filled family day of tennis will involve parent/child doubles matches for eight age groups: 3-5yrs, 6-8yrs, 9-10yrs, 11-12yrs, 13-14yrs, 15-16,yrs over 16s, over 60s. Free.

n Ride our Bridleways, Battle Recreation Ground, Saturday July 28, 9.30am.

Riding in groups, cyclists will be guided along local Battle bridleways before returning to Battle Recreation Ground. Ride will take between an hour-and-a-half to two hours. Children under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult. Free.
