Free smoke alarms now available from fire service

FREE smoke alarms are now available to all local householders under a government-funded scheme.

Householders can ring a free number and request a home fire safety visit. Firefighters will fit smoke alarms, where necessary, without charge.

Christine Spiller, station coordinator for East Sussex Fire and Rescue, says: "All the householder need do is ring 0800 177 7069. They will take their details '“ name and address '“ and I will call them and arrange a day and time that is convenient to them.

"If they already have a smoke alarms, the crew will check that they are in order and safe. If they are not they will replace them free of charge as part of the free home safety check."

Free alarms were previously only available under the scheme to pensioners and those at risk.
