Former Horsham GP’s art exhibited at town centre gallery

Paintings by Kezia Noel-Paton, who worked at Park Surgery and lives in Faygate with her husband Duncan, are currently on show at the Art Ache Gallery within Rachael’s Kitchen in the Carfax, Horsham.

Many of the pieces in the solo exhibition entitled ‘Gorgeous Places’ take inspiration from buildings the couple have seen on their travels, including the Lake Hotel in Udaipur, India, and the Nikolsky Cathedral in St Petersburg.

She said: “I love travelling and that gives me a lot of inspiration and ideas and in addition to reliving all the travelling.”

The collection on display have seen her move from images of nature to palaces, castles, follies, and abbeys seen on her travels.

Rather than reproducing the images so as to provide a straight-forward copy she has used different media, perspective, and different ways of doing a background to produce a more individual style.

She has used salt in one painting and gold leaf in another and described ‘having new ideas and then finding new ways of expressing them’.

Kezia added: “I’m very pleased with having them here. It’s a very nice space and Sally [Bushnell, of Art Ache Gallery] has been very helpful.”

Her mother was a prize-winner at the Royal College of Art, and Kezia painted on and off all her life as a hobby, but only had limited time between working and raising her two children.

She retired as a GP at Park Surgery in 2003 after almost 30 years and in her free time took short courses at West Dean College, and drawing classes at Mill Studio in Arundel.

Her work has since been exhibited at Christ’s Hospital School, the Capitol theatre in Horsham, the Oxmarket Centre of Arts in Chichester, she regularly shows her paintings in pop-up galleries in Swan Walk Shopping Centre, and is a member of the Horsham Artists Open Studios, participating in their summer art trail.

She added: “I very much enjoy it as it means being in contact with other artists when you are painting at home.”

The exhibition opened on February 21 and runs until March 20. The gallery is open from 9am-5.30pm Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm on Sundays. Originals can be purchased or acquired as professionally-produced prints.
