Flying rainbow flag against discrimination

THE RAINBOW flag will be flying over the town hall for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

On May 17 each year, events are held across the world calling for respect for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and this year the Hastings and Rother Rainbow Alliance (HRRA) is launching a new information leaflet to help combat hate crime.

The group has also produced LGBT friendly stickers for local organisations to show support.

Mary Benton, HRRA secretary, said: “When Hastings and Rother Rainbow Alliance hold information stalls people often make comments like ‘surely there is no prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people nowadays’.

“Sadly, we have to say, yes there is still a lot of prejudice, discrimination and hate crime against LGBT people.

“Despite significant progress towards securing legislative equality, the daily lives of many LGBT people are still overshadowed by the fear of hate crime.”
