ONE of the newest sports clubs in 1066 Country had a ball when they held their first taster session on Hastings seafront.

Members of Hastings Predators Floorball Club took part in the event last Saturday supported by South Saxons Hockey Club and the South Coast Devils In Line roller hockey team.

The day-long event was held at the caged outdoor play area on the seafront opposite the Pirate crazy golf park.

The aim was to showcase floorball and invite members of the public to have a go.

Hastings Predators formed in November 2011 when Latvian student Kaspars Maksimoves entered a team into the South East Floorball regional league.

The tea struggled to win many games in their first season but established themselves as the only club of its kind in East Sussex.

But last season they finished sixth out of eight teams in the league and continue to make steady progress. The new season starts next month and the club aims to break into the top four.

Members of South Saxons have been trying out floorball this year taking part in training sessions at the YMCA Centre in St Paul’s Road.

On Saturday a friendly match was held during the taster event against Saxons with the hosts running out comfortable 8-1 winners.

New players were invited to try out both sports.

There was a floorball speed gun and shooting target challenge while those trying hockey could attempt to beat the goalie and learn stick skills. A round robin of mini-games then took place.

Predators organiser Lauren Edwards-Fowle said: “A lot of people would never have seen floorball being played before so we had quite a few asking what it was. We just wanted to give people a chance to try it out.

“We had about 30 people give it a go and it was a lot of fun. We start the new league season next month and we’re always looking for new players.” For more information about the Predators call club coach Kaspars Maksimovs on 07411 399065.
