A GROUP of nine, many of whom have never sang before, have joined a national choir of women connected to the fishing industry.
Toni Adams, Sharyn Andrews, Mandy Apps, Barb Bollen, Toni Early, Tracey Edmunds, Jackie Milton, Becky Tutt, and Didge White, are the Hastings contingent of The Fishwives Choir.
The choir is the brainchild of Jane Dolby, from Southend who decided to embark upon a project to raise funds for the charity which provided so much help to her following the loss of her husband, The Fishermen’s Mission.
It is four years since Jane lost her trawler man husband Colin, when he died at sea after his fishing vessel was caught in a freak storm just off the Essex coast.
Jane was inspired by the success and popularity of other choirs such as Glee, The Port Isaac Fisherman’s Friends, The Rock Choir and the Military Wives.
Women have joined the choir from all over the UK, including Hastings.
Jackie, 48, of Old London Road, is part of the Adams fishing family.
She said: “I read Jane’s story and just wanted to help.
“The nice thing about it is there is no professional helping us as such, we are trying to do it off our own backs.”
The group of nine first responded to Jane’s call for women to join the choir in May this year, although it is only recently that they have been rehearsing.
Jackie added: “At first you get a bit shy but then that goes out the window.”
The various local groups have been rehearsing the song (which is being kept under wraps) independently, but Jane aims to gather all the singers together for the recording if possible.
All profits from the single, due to be released in Spring next year, will go to the charity.
The ladies are fundraising to raise money for fares and accommodation for those having to travel to the recordings from as far afield as the Scottish highlands.
The Hastings ladies welcome any other local women connected with the fishing industry to join them.

The choir is to record a single to be released in spring 2013
