First Horsham Youth Triathlon announced

Junior sport in Horsham is set to be boosted by the first ever Horsham Youth Triathlon on Sunday 23 June.

Triathlon is an Olympic sport which Britain can truly claim to be in the top ranks of following the gold and bronze medal exploits of Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, at London 2012, and it is hoped that this new Horsham event can identify more young talent in that vein.

The triathlon will comprise a series of eight races based on different age and experience ranges.

Held in Horsam Park and The Pavilions leisure centre youngsters aged eight to 18 will be able to enter.

The Tristar races are for youngsters with triathlon experience and the try-a-tris are for novices with no or very limited experience.

It is anticipated that in Horsham, being the sporty and game community that it is, there will be no shortage of youngsters prepared to undertake the challenge of combining a swim, cycle and run in immediate sequence.

Horsham District Council is heading up the partnership effort and will draw on the considerable triathlon event management expertise of Hedgehog Tri, a group that organises junior triathlons all over Sussex.

There is a cost to enter the triathlon and details can be found on the council’s website.

The newly formed Horsham Triathlon Club, Horsham Youth Cycling Club and the Set4Success consortium, which raises funds for talented young local sports performers, will contribute volunteers.

Jonathan Chowen (Con, Cowfold, Shermanbury and West Grinstead), cabinet member for arts, heritage and leisure, said: “This looks like a great event and I wish I could join in.”
