First arrest minutes into launch of police crackdown

A MOTORIST from St Leonards was arrested and charged with drink driving just minutes into the launch of the latest police crackdown.

Liam Wells, aged 25, was stopped in The Green, St Leonards by officers at 12.10am on Sunday morning (June 1). Wells, of Beecham Place, is due to appear at Hastings Magistrates Court on Wednesday July 16.

Operation Dragonfly was launched by Sussex Police at midnight on Saturday. It is a month long campaign to tackle drink and drug-driving across the county. Seven people were due appear in court across the county after being charged with drink-driving in the first two days of the crackdown. Superintendent Jane Derrick, the head of the force’s roads policing unit, said: “We warned everyone that we would not tolerate motorists driving after drinking or taking drugs but clearly some people do not listen to warnings. We will continue to catch and arrest drink and drug drivers throughout the month. If you are considering getting behind the wheel you are making a choice of whether or not to put your life and the lives of other people in danger. The answer is simple - drink or drive.”
