Firefighters called out again to East Hill over weekend

FURTHER fires have broken out on the East Hill since last Wednesday evening’s blaze.

Firefighters were again called out to the area to tackle gorse which was alight on Friday morning at around 7am and again yesterday (Sunday) morning just before noon.

Yesterday’s blaze affected an area 20m by 20m.

Last Wednesday scores of residents in the Old Town were evacuated after a large fire swept across the East Hill on Wednesday evening.

A large area of gorse and heather, stretching up to two miles in length, caught alight, sending large plumes of smoke across town.

People living in Tackleway and All Saints Street had to leave their homes for around two hours after the blaze took hold at around 5pm.

As yet the cause of the fires remains unknown.
