A FIRE broke out this morning (Friday) at Stamco Timber’s St Leonards site.

Thick plumes of black smoke filled the air around the Churchfields Industrial Estate after the blaze took hold at around 11.30am this morning.

Six fire engines were sent to the scene to tackle the fire in the firm’s a dust extraction hopper - including crews from nearby Battle, Broad Oak, Eastbourne and Rye.

Specialist breathing apparatus, two main jets, foam, an extendable platform and an array of hydrants were used to try and bring the fire under control.

There are no reports of any injuries and the area has been evacuated as a precaution.
