Diabetes UK is urging schools and students in the area to take part in a short film competition to help raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes and improve care in schools for children and young people living with the condition.

The charity‘s ‘Diabetes in School’ Short Film Competition is open to all students aged 11 to 17 in Sussex who are invited to submit a film, of no more than three minutes long, sharing their experiences of life with diabetes at school.

For students to take part in the competition they will need their school’s permission to film on their premises, and then they can enter with some friends, or on their own.

There are two categories that students can submit a film for: best individual film, or best group film which is limited to no more than six people.

The film entries will be judged by an expert panel, which includes film actress Elinor Crawley who starred in the British film Submarine (2011) and has Type 1 diabetes.

Shortlisted entrants and the winner of the fan favourite category will be invited to a special awards ceremony held at the at BAFTA in London.

Winners will receive prizes for themselves and their school, including IMac desktop computers, iPad Airs 2, and GroPro cameras. The ‘Diabetes in School’ Short Film competition opened on June 1 and runs to November 16.

Jill Steaton Diabetes UK South East Regional Manager said: “Getting involved in the competition is really easy. You don’t need to have Type 1 diabetes to take part.

Students just need to make sure their schools have given them permission and can do it as group project or individually. We are really excited about seeing what the schools and students in Sussex are able to come up with.”

All of the films submitted will be available to view on Diabetes UK’s YouTube channel.
