CHILDREN and staff at Torfield School said farewell to Jean Mockford as she retired from her role as headteacher.

Jean left Torfield after six years at the school and after 33 years of working in mainstream and special schools across the South East of England.

Pupils and staff held parties and celebrations for Jean during her last week at Torfield.

Under Jean’s leadership Torfield earned recognition for specialist provision for primary aged children by gaining accreditation from the National Autistic Society.

It is also one of only three schools in the UK to hold the Excellence in Makaton Award.

The school was also successful in an Ofsted monitoring visit last year.

Torfield School has now started a new chapter by forming a federation with nearby Saxon Mount School.

This partnership will be led by the current headteacher of Saxon Mount, Richard Preece.

Jean said: “I have had a wonderful time at Torfield and would like to thank staff, children and parents for their support over the past six years.

“I wish Richard and the school every success for the future.”
