A DAY AT THE SEASIDE: Last Saturday (June 25) the weather was kind and the rain stayed away, apart from one brief light shower, for the Big Etchingham Day at the Seaside, which combined all the best of the annual Fete and the Flower and Dog Show on the same day, the Fete and Dog Show was held in Queen's Garden and the Flower Show in the Church. The afternoon started with a Fancy Dress parade from the Village Hall at 1pm, led by a decorated float with musicians playing music all the way down the High Street. By the time the parade reached Queen's Garden there was already a large number of people starting to enjoy the various stalls, the food tents and the bar provided by the Etchingham Club was already busy. The Dog Show again attracted a lot of entries and the children enjoyed the giant sandpit that was created for the day. The Flower Show was a a lot earlier this year, normally held in early September, so the categories had to be adjusted a bit this year to suit produce that would be available, but there were a good number of entries and the standard was as usual very high.Many stayed on through the evening to enjoy more excellent food being served along with an evening of music from the fantastic 21 Whiskeys and of course the bar stayed open throughout the evening.

There were so many people involved in the organising and setting up of the event, and of course clearing up afterwards, so too many people to thank everyone individually, but special thanks must go to Chas and Lucy for all the work they have put in co-ordinating the whole event, special thanks also to Phil and Phillipa Hinde for all their work in organising the Flower Show. Many thanks to everyone who helped on the day and mainly everyone who turned up to enjoy the event.

FLOWER SHOW RESULTS: Too many names to list all the winners in the many categories, so here are the details of the winners of the main trophies. The British Legion Cup, awarded for the most points in the flower, fruit and vegetables classes won by George Baldock. The Whins Trophy for the most points in Floral Art, Linda Neve. The Wishdown Cup for the best exhibit in flowers, fruit and vegetables, Alison Vernon. The Warren Trophy fo best entry in children’s section. Georgina Briggs. The Chandler Cup for best entry in children’s cookery, Poppy Withnall. Improvements Committee Cup for most points in domestic section, Linda Neve. The St. Jude Trophy for best handicraft exhibit, Glen Ellis. The Brookside Trophy for best photographic exhibit, Phillipa Hinde. The Butler Cup for best flower arrangement, Jane Brown. The Drivers Cup for heaviest vegetable, Eleanor Knowles. The McDonald Shield for best gladioli, George Baldock.

PHOTO DISPLAY: During the Fete and the Flower and Dog Show I put on a display of a large quantity of old photos, postcards and memorabilia from the area – in the Church Chancel. I have left the display in place for a couple of weeks so if you did not get a chance for a proper look on Saturday the Church is open daily from 11am to 4pm.

NEW BENCH: The Parish Council, assisted by a grant from Rother District Council, commissioned a commemorative bench that is suitably inscribed to mark the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. The bench is sited appropriately in Queen’s Garden, which was established to mark the Coronation of the Queen in 1953. The bench was officially handed over to the village during the Fete by Councillor Tony Ganly, Chairman of the Community Grants Panel at Rother District Council.

LOCAL POLICING: You will probably be aware that Sussex Police are in the process of introducing their new Local Policing Model, and that the role of PCSO’s has changed, villages will no longer have a named PCSO for their village. Some residents have expressed concerns regarding Police cover for their village and the ease of contacting the Police. Inspector Daniel Russell will be attending the July Parish Council meeting to explain the future Policing in the area and will be happy to answer any questions residents have, everyone is welcome to attend the meeting, further details will be published nearer the meeting date.

MUSIC FESTIVAL: The Etchingham Music Festival takes place this year from tomorrow (July 2) to July 10. This year the concerts will include performances by Instant Sunshine, Florian Mitrea, Atea Wind Quintet, Richard Evans, opera students from the Royal College of Music, ‘Singing for Fun’ and the Etchingham Poetry Group. July 2, 7.30pm, Instant Sunshine - a comedy cabaret group well known for their radio and TV performances; July 3, 7pm, Florian Mitrea and the Atrea Wind Quartet ; July 6, 7.30pm, A tribute to concert the the Festival’s late Patron, Dr. Peter Katin. Richard Evans, one of Peter’s favourite pupils and friend , will perform a programme inspired by Peter’s own beguiling repertoire; July 9, 7.30pm, The Saturday Opera Supper evening will showcase acclaimed students from the Royal College of Music; Sunday July 10, 4pm, a free concert ‘Shakespeare through the seasons’. To mark the 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare the Festival presents an afternoon of choral music by ‘Singing for Fun’ from Crowborough and readings from Shakespeare by the Etchingham Poetry Group. Tickets for the concerts are £18, concessions £15, except for the Opera concerts for which all tickets are £22 and the free concert on the Sunday which is obviously free.
