Duo go the extra mile for cancer charity

TWO friends are going the extra mile and taking part in a 100km walk to raise funds for a leading UK cancer charity.

Claire Bedwell, 26, and Emma Reed, 32, who are particpating in the London to Brighton 100km walk, aim to hike 100km in just 24 hours on May 25 in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The duo, who both work as teaching assistants at Chirst Church CE Primary School in St Leonards, decided to take on the challenege after Claire’s mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012.

Claire said: We’ve been training for weeks, every other week we’ve been walking for miles.”

Emma added: It is been going really well, we’ve walked over 300 miles between us. I am bordering on terrified! It’s scary because we’ll walking during the night and there will be no real breaks. But we have been training really hard for it.”

Taking part in a series of challenges, both women particpated in the Hastings Half Maratahon and Emma ran the London Marathon, finishing in four hours 17 minutes andd 55 second.

Emma told the Observer: “The London Marathon was brilliant. It’s something I had wanted to do for sometime. It’s a dream come true and it was fantastic to do for a cause that’s close to our hearts.”

The money raised by the pair will be added to the thousands of pounds raised by Louis Bedwell, Claire’s brother, who has raised through a series of challenges he called The One Expedition.

To raise £10,000 for Cance Reasearch UK, Louis started The One Expedition in order to set himself a series of extreme physical challenges .

Claire and Emma told the Observer that the support they’ve received from family and friends was amazing. Emma said:“We would not have been able to do this without the support of family and friends.”
