Drop-in centre is holding open day

The centre helps people who are affected by a relative or friend's misuse of alcohol or drugs. Held at The Hub Community Centre, which is on the corner of Queensway and Canada Grove, the centre is normally open between 1pm and 2.30pm on Thursdays.

The open day takes place today from 1pm to 4pm and is open to anyone interested in finding out more about the work of the drop-in centre, which was set up by the Families and Friends Project of the West Sussex Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT).

The DAAT recently presented the four Centre's volunteers with Achievement Awards.

Carl said: 'At The Hub Community Centre, we offer a safe place where people receive '“ in total confidence '“ free information and support, including looking at the options that are open to them.

'The four of us have all received comprehensive and accredited training from the DAAT. This includes drug and alcohol awareness, child protection, plus counselling skills and listening to people in a non-judgemental way.'

The open day includes a buffet, speeches outlining the success of the centre's first year, plus a workshop on family support, which is being held between 3pm-4pm.

'It is an opportunity for us to show the community how we can help people who are often living under considerable stress, often lack self-esteem and feel isolated,' said Carl.

Pat Arculus, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for adult services said: 'It is because of the commitment of the volunteers and their ability to reach out that the drop-in centre is a such a valuable local service.'
