Part of the site of the Battle of Lewes, covering nearly 20 acres, is also up for sale.

And three grass paddocks, totalling nearly 2 acres, are included in the sale.

The sale is being handled by Clifford Dann, who are giving a guide price of 150,000 for the five parcels of land.

David Campion, head of Dann's agricultural department, said the gallops are reputedly the oldest racing gallops in Europe.

And he added: 'The sale is likely to attract unprecedented interest from conservationists, historical societies and equestrians, as well as private individuals.

'This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a piece of open Downland which is absolutely unique in terms of both history and geography.'

The sale brochure says the land is suitable for a variety of equestrian, recreational and amenity uses, subject to planning permission. Mr Ffitch-Heyes was not available for comment this week.
