A Fire Service spokesman said: “By this time last year, dozens of entries had been received but something odd is definitely going on this year.

“We’ve decided to extend the deadline to see if we can outfox the Grinch.”

The deadline for entries is now December 4.

The Service is urging anyone under the age of 12 to help us show the Grinch that Christmas doesn’t come from a store, but it’s a picture from you that means a whole lot more.

This year the theme is ‘Have a safe and Happy Christmas’

The design could show how important it is to have working smoke alarms in your home, how to be candle safe, how you should pay attention when cooking or how you should regularly sweep your chimney.

The winner will be chosen by our Chief Fire Officer, Gary Walsh and will receive a £25 National Book Token gift card.

Pictures should be drawn on one side of an A4 sized piece of paper and the design should fill as much of the page as possible. The child’s name, age, and contact details should be on the back.

Entries should be posted to the following address: Christmas Card Competition, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, 20 Upperton Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN21 1EU.

The Fire Service says it is unable to return any submitted entries.
