Crimes in Horsham schools revealed

The amount and types of crimes which took place in schools and colleges between April 2011 and January 26 2014 were obtained by the West Sussex County Times through an FoI (Freedom of Information) request.

The data did not reveal who committed the crimes, only that they took place on the school property.

The College of Richard Collyer campus in Hurst Road, Horsham, was the site of 17 crime incidents within the timeframe.

Sussex Police said the types of incidents which took place were: two assaults without injury, eight thefts or unlawful taking of a pedal cycles, a theft from an automatic machine or meter, five unspecified thefts and one criminal damage to a building.

There were 15 incidents at The Forest School in Horsham within the same time period.

The incidents were: an assault without injury, four assaults with injury, six thefts, two incidents of criminal damage to a building, one unspecified criminal damage and an incident of causing public fear, alarm or distress.

Five crimes took place in Millais School and Tanbridge House School.

All five incidents in Millais related to thefts.

Incidents at Tanbridge included theft, handling stolen goods and one incident of racially or religiously aggravated assault with injury.

There were two thefts at St Mary’s CofE Primary.

Holbrook Primary School was subject to one burglary and there was one assault with injury at Heron Way Primary.

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council, which is the Local Education Authority (LEA), said: “Any criminal activity in schools is taken very seriously and appropriate action is taken by each individual school to combat this.’’
