SHOP takings were snatched from a woman in St Leonards on Wednesday as she headed to a local bank to deposit the money.

The woman was walking along Norman Road at 11.45am when a cloth bag of cash she was carrying was ripped from her grasp by a man.

He ran into Saxon Street and got into the driver’s seat of a Ford Ka, which he then drove at speed the wrong way down the one way street, followed by police who had been near the scene and directed by a member of the public.

After a short distance, another man who had been a passenger in the car got out and ran off on foot and the driver then reversed the car downhill before crashing it and running off over gardens. He is described as black, 6ft 2in tall and medium build.

Police have not indicated how much cash was in the bag.

Detective Constable Anton Affonso said: “The victim was obviously very shaken by the experience, but was not injured. We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about the driver or the passenger in the car.

“Please call Sussex Police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting serial 688 of 01/08.”
