Detectives from East Surrey CID appealed for information after the man, in his twenties, was found in the grounds of St Bartholomew’s Church, in Church Road, at around 9pm on February 17.

Parishioners, who were having a meeting in the church at the time, saw the fire through the upstairs window and ran to help.

The Horley team rector, Rev Calvert Prentis, described the evening’s events as ‘horrific’.

They wrapped the man in a damp blanket and stayed with him until emergency services arrived.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: “He was taken by ambulance crews to St George’s Hospital for treatment to serious burns and remains in a critical condition.

“An investigation was launched following the incident and several vital witnesses came forward as a result.
