Unemployed man is jailed for stealing meat and wine

A WOULD-be thief has been jailed after he was caught attempting to steal wine and meat from a town centre store.

Michael Reid, 49, of Devonshire Road, was spotted by security staff in Marks and Spencer in Priory Meadow on Saturday.

He tried to leave the shop without paying for six bottles of wine and two joints of beef, worth more than £50 in total.

Reid was arrested by police and taken to Hastings police station.

He pleaded guilty to one count of shoplifting when he appeared before Hastings magistrates in court on Monday.

Reid was jailed for three weeks.
