A MAN and woman have been sentenced after a vicious attack on newsagent staff left them with long-term injuries.
Nicky Warnes, 33, and Samantha Clarke, 38, both of Caves Road, St Leonards appeared at Hove Crown Court on Monday (March 26).
Warnes was sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment for one count of inflicting grievous bodily harm and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Clarke was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment suspended for 24 months for one count of inflicting grievous bodily harm.
Both had previously pleaded guilty to the offences on March 6.
The attack took place on October 6, 2011, at around 9pm when two members of staff were closing.
Clarke and Warnes entered the shop, picked out cans of alcohol and started arguing between themselves and with the staff when they went to pay.
When the staff tried to get them to leave so they could close the shop they were both assaulted.
One of the staff members was hit over the head with a jar of coffee and the other with a can of beer.
The victim who was hit with the can of beer was also punched to the head and bitten.
Following the assault Warnes and Clarke left the shop and were arrested a short time later.
One of the victims received stitches to a head injury, and was left with a black eye and severe facial bruising.
He now has a hearing aid as one of the blows to his head caused damage to his eardrum, and has undergone surgery to his eye socket which has left him with impaired vision.
The second victim was left with bruising and a bite to his hand. He is on kidney dialysis and had the canula ripped from his arm during the assault and had to undergo a minor operation to have a new canula inserted.
Detective Constable Carole Shoesmith of East Sussex CID said: “This was a nasty assault which has left the victims with long term injuries and they are both receiving on-going treatment.”
