A county councillor who lives in St Leonards has appeared in court charged with motoring offences.

Cllr Carl Maynard, of Baldslow Down, has appeared before Hastings Magistrates Court charged with driving an unroadworthy vehicle and having no MOT.

The 40-year-old was stopped by police on the A259 De La Warr Road, Bexhill, on September 1.

It is alleged the suspension on the Rover Metro he was driving had collapsed.

Maynard pleaded not guilty to both charges. He must return to Hastings Magistrates Court for a trial on December 22.

Since 1999, Cllr Maynard has represented the Brede Valley Ward, which includes Brede, Westfield, Udimore, Broad Oak and Kent Street, on Rother District Council where he is leader.

He also represents Brede Valley and Marsham on East Sussex County Council, where Cllr Maynard is the lead member for economy, transport and environment.

The county council’s website states Cllr Maynard is responsible for operational services, planning and developmental control, transport strategy and road safety, environmental and waste strategy, trading standards, emergency planning, gypsies and travellers.
