Care home worker walks free after manslaughter re-trial

A CARE home worker from St Leonards, accused of starting a fire that killed an elderly resident, walked free this afternoon after the jury failed to reach a verdict at the re-trial.

Rebecca Reasbeck, 20, of London Road, St Leonards, was accused of setting fire to the room of 85 year-old Irene Herring’s third floor bedroom at Ancaster Court in Hastings Road, Bexhill, on the morning of February 2, 2009.

Prosecutors at Lewes Crown Court alleged that Reasbeck, who denied manslaughter, hoped to act the heroine, by saving the bedridden pensioner, but that she could not reach her in time.

Jurors were discharged after deliberating for 17 hours and 4 minutes. Prosecutors decided that there would be no public interest in seeking a third trial, and Judge Mr Justice Saunders entered a not guilty verdict.
