AN accountant has appeared in court accused of defrauding his employers of more than £800,000.

Paul Goring, 47, of Vale Road, St Leonards, is charged with five counts of fraud by abuse of position against Coastal Amusements Ltd, in Pelham Place. It is alleged by the Crown Prosecution Service that Goring conducted a series of transactions and paid a total of £810,640 into his personal account and the bank accounts of three other people.

The alleged fraud happened between December 5, 2007, and August 25 last year.

Goring was a qualified accountant and auditor who was employed by Coastal Amusements Ltd as office manager in 2007.

Goring appeared in the dock in front of Hastings magistrates on Tuesday and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address. He made no plea to each of the five charges.

Magistrates decided to send the case to be tried at Lewes Crown Court.

Goring must return to Hastings Magistrates Court on April 24 when a committal hearing will take place.

He was released on unconditional bail.

Coastal Amusements Ltd was set up in Hastings in 1961 and has a number of properties and business interests in the town including, pictured above, The Deluxe leisure centre and Bingo club.

Goring volunteers for the Hastings Old Town Ghost Walk tours, acting out some of the spooks behind some of the stories. He has also been an actor in various plays at the Stables Theatre in The Bourne.
