Court fine for £20-a-day drug addict caught in possession

A drug addict caught with a stash of cannabis at his home, a wad of cash and a pair of scales escaped with a fine after being charged with possession.

Thomas McKenzie, 21, of Fellows Road, appeared at Hastings Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to the drugs charge and another of letting an uninsured friend borrow his moped.

Mark Kateley, prosecuting, told the court that police were led to McKenzie's house after stopping Justin Gertsman '“ who told them the moped he was illegally driving belonged to McKenzie.

Mr Kateley said: "Police searched his house and found 60 grams of cannabis. There were also some other drugs associated with another individual.

"He (McKenzie) was arrested and told police he is an habitual drug user and had been buying it for his own use.

"He also said that electric scales found there were his to use to weigh out the drugs."

Aiden Harvey, defending, said the cash found in the home was money owed to McKenzie's dealer and that he usually bought the drug in bulk because it worked out cheaper.

And he also said that McKenzie '“ who gets 52 a week JobSeeker's allowance '“ had already had his fingers burnt.

"He bought an ounce thinking he was getting a good deal," said Mr Harvey.

"But it turned out to be a load of rubbish mixed with all sorts of things."

McKenzie was fined 67 for the drugs, 100 for no insurance and 100 costs.
