THE future of a Seahaven information and counselling service for young people looks bright after it scooped a 119,000 Lottery grant.

As a result of the windfall Just Ask, based in Meeching Road, Newhaven, will be able to extend its opening hours and range of services for young people in Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven.

Through its trained volunteers Just Ask provides free advice on a broad range of issues from sexual health to drugs and alcohol for ages 11-25.

Just Ask co-ordinator Kate Robinson told how grant cuts last year threatened the whole future of the service.

She said: 'Last year we had a huge funding problem and went through a crisis period. There were definite fears it could fold or have to merge with another organisation.'

But Just Ask chairman Graham Millett added: 'This three-year grant will make it possible to expand the service and recruit and train more volunteers for our work with young people. The grant will also enable us to build on our success as a credible independent service.'

The grant will fund a full-time project manager, staff and volunteer training, and publicity.

Newhaven and Seaford MP Norman Baker also welcomed the grant. He said: 'Just Ask provides an invaluable counselling service for young people in my constituency and I warmly congratulate them on receiving the offer of this grant.

'Lottery money spent in this way is both worthwhile and constructive. I hope it encourages more people to become involved in voluntary or charity work. This can really make a difference to local communities like Seaford and Newhaven.'
