Councilor rides over a hundred miles in aid of Fire Fighters Charity

STOPPING for a break, and a well earned cuppa, at Bexhill fire station on Friday, was Cllr Ted Kemble and his 'support' riders, who had just completed the third leg of an ambitious one hundred and thirty one mile sponsored bike ride.

The challenging ride, which commenced on 17th September at Hove Community Fire Station, was to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity, and over the duration of four days, involved the riders cycling between fourteen of the twenty four East Sussex fire stations encompassing Forest Row, Crowborough, Rye, Bexhill, Hastings, Eastbourne, Seaford, and Newhaven, finally returning back to Brighton.

Cllr Kemble, who is Vice Chairman of East Sussex Fire Authority, along with Eastbourne Fire Fighter and Chief Staff Officer Mark Matthews, and Eastbourne HQ Fire Authority Clerk Sue Klein, were hoping that when all the sponsorship money was in, that the ride would have raised well in excess of 1,000 for the charity.

Cllr Kemble, himself a Fire Fighter for twenty two years, said that despite being, "the wrong side of sixty", that he was enjoying doing the ride for such a good cause and hoped to "raise as much money as possible", but described the previous days experience, in which he said around six miles were "all hills", as being, "hard graft."

Praising Cllr Kemble for taking up the challenge of a long, and sometimes difficult bike ride, CSO Mark Matthews said: "Myself and my colleagues are extremely proud of the councillor for supporting our charity, and are impressed at the size of the challenge he has set himself."

The Fire Fighters Charity supports fire fighters during a time of need, assisting over 13,000 individuals each year and providing pioneering treatment. Every thirty seconds fire fighters in the UK are called to an incident which can often result in sustaining physical injuries whilst carrying out their duties.
