COUNCIL THANKS COMMUNITY STALWARTS

TWO people from the Uckfield and Heathfield areas have been officially thanked for the time they spend serving the community.

They received certificates of appreciation from the chairman of Wealden District Council, Cllr Mrs Pat Kennedy, at a ceremony at Crowborough.

Peter Easton, of Nutley, has been responsible for maintaining and improving all the Nutley Memorial Hall Trust properties and helped secure a lottery grant of 24,000 to carry out vital work to Nutley War Memorial Hall.

He takes an active interest in village and district life, providing help for people who are on their own or faced with an emergencies.

Joan Redford, of Mayfield, for the last 14 years has organised and led walks around the village.

She also monitors the condition of the parish's 80 miles of rights of way, reporting back to the parish council's rights of way committee.

Four other people from the district also received awards - John Dolwin, Rotherfield; Jim Hoad, Ninfield; Polly Watt, Danehill; and Geoff Miles, Bells Yew Green.

Cllr Kennedy told the awards ceremony on Friday last week: 'They have been the cement that holds village life together, making sure things happen for the wider benefits of others.'
