A SCAM promising council tax payers money off their bill is doing the rounds in 1066 Country.
East Sussex County Council’s trading standards team is warning local residents to be on their guard against the con, which sees someone calling and claiming to be from a government department.
The bogus caller says it is their job to contact people who regularly pay council tax as some residents are entitled to money back. They then ask for bank and building society account details in order to process the money back payment.
Councillor Bob Tidy, head of community services at the authority, urged people to keep an eye out for the calls.
He said: “With council tax bills being sent out this month, our concern is that more people will get these types of calls and some, including older residents and vulnerable people in our communities, may fall for this scam.
“Of course no such council tax money back discounts are paid and the only thing that the fraudster is interested in is getting hold of your personal financial information.”
