Could Hastings rival Miami as culture hotspot?

MOVE over Miami, Hastings has been named one of the top ten cultural hotspots for 2011.

The Independent on Sunday compiled a list of ten places where exciting new gallery openings were creating a cultural buzz, and Hastings was placed at number four thanks to the Jerwood Gallery, and what the newspaper called its “formidable” collection of work.

Capital of USA cool Miami topped the list, which also featured St Petersburg in Florida, Tallinn in Estonia, Helsinki and Turku in Finland and Antwerp in Belgium. Alongside Hastings, the UK was represented by Bristol, Margate and

Stratford-upon-Avon, where the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre has just been unveiled.

Cllr Peter Chowney, lead member for regeneration at Hastings Borough Council, said: “It’s incredible that the Jerwood Gallery has enabled us to feature so prominently, but not surprising perhaps, considering the wealth of cultural creativity we have here in Hastings. This kind of recognition and publicity will be great for tourism and the arts in Hastings and will hopefully result in an influx of visitors eager to see the Jerwood collection, along with all the other creative arts venues we have.”
