Teams from all sections of the local community competed in an eclectic football tournament last week.
More than one hundred players laced their boots in Alexandra Park on Sunday (September 14) for the sixth annual Hastings Intercultural Organisation (HIO) football tournament. A hard battle led to the team from the Conquest Hospital triumphing over the Bengal Tigers.
Hastings MP Amber Rudd congratulated the Conquest and said the event acted as “an opportunity for the communities of Hastings and St Leonards to celebrate the diversity of our town.” The tournament was set up in 2008 after Qatari student Mohammed al-Majed was killed in Hastings in a racially motivated attack. Oliur Rahman, HIO chair, called the tournament an opportunity to promote cohesion and unity.
