Commons MP meets up with care home 'MP'

MP Greg Barker praised the work of Bexhill's Tall Trees care home resident Ena Baker when he called in for afternoon tea to talk to her about her work as a 'Care Management Group Service User MP' for the Brighton, Hove and East Sussex Region.

In her new role, elected by the residents from care homes across the region, Ena has become a champion of the interests of the CMG care home users. Ena had previously written to Greg to ask for his advice on running a successful election campaign to get the role.

Ena told Greg she had recently visited the local offices of Stagecoach bus company to ask about improving disabled access to buses in Bexhill and Hastings. She has also been visiting other service users in the area to listen to their views.

Ena showed Greg the diary she has been keeping of all her activities since she was elected, which includes putting up a billboard, organising monthly “MP” surgeries and printing campaign T-shirts and leaflets.

Greg said: “I was delighted to be invited for tea with Ena, who treated me to cream cakes. It was a great opportunity to congratulate her in person on her successful election campaign.

“Ena clearly has lots of ideas about improving services for disabled people in the area and she is keen to listen to the concerns of other service users in the CMG group. It is an interesting role that many other local care home groups may wish to copy.”
