A COMMUNITY circus group will be performing in town on Sunday (June 1) in a bid to raise funds for the victims of the Old Town fire.

The Hastings Guerrilla Circus will be holding a fundraiser, starting in the town centre at 2pm and finishing in the Old Town at 4pm, to raise money for people devastated by fire last Sunday (May 25).

Sweeping through buildings in Marine Parade, Old Town, six properties were severely damaged and a 66-year-old woman, Pirkko Pellinen, was seriously injured after jumping from a burning building.

Laura Tyson, 32, of Hastings Circus Guerrilla, said: “We were performing at St Mary in the Castle for the Universal Colours of Rhythm which was part of the Body Circus and we met Pirkko from the Iceni belly dance group. The next day we saw the fire and it was quite upsetting. We talked amongst ourselves and we thought we’d do something to help raise money.”

The Hasting Guerrilla Circus was started in 2013 by Claire Cantrell with the aim of building a local circus community of like-minded cirque enthusiasts.

Money raised by the group will be donated to Hastings Old Town Phoenix Fund which has been launched by Old Town businesses to support victims on the fire.

The fund held its first meeting on Tuesday (May 27) at the Butlers Emporium where some 70 people attended to share their fundraising ideas.

Laura told the Observer that one of the things she loves about the Old Town is the way “everyone pulls together to help each other”.
